Penned has no accounts. Your play stays in your browser. This page lists what the site stores and sends, as of September 2026.
What stays on your device
Your progress, streak, saved boards, pencil notes, and settings live in your browser’s local storage. Nothing about your play is tied to a name or an email address. Settings → Reset all… erases Penned’s saved play and settings in that browser.
Anonymous play statistics
By default the game sends a small set of anonymous events to Penned’s own server so the puzzles can be tuned: the date and puzzle opened; each check, including how many letters were confirmed or removed and whether the board was solved or the attempt ended unsolved; which numbered word path was completed on which check, its length, and how many incorrect letters had been removed from it; when the tutorial started or finished; when a puzzle or run was shared; your current streak; whether you have played before; the number of published puzzles available; and your time-zone offset so days line up. The game also sends its version, the board size, elapsed time, and score tier when they apply. Each request carries a random identifier stored in your browser and replaced every 30 days. The server accepts only its fixed list of fields. It never stores letters, guesses, words, names, email addresses, or IP addresses.
Events are kept for three months, then discarded.
You can turn this off under Settings → Anonymous stats. Penned’s anonymous play statistics also honor the Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control browser signals. When either is on, no anonymous play events are sent.
Cookies and third parties
Penned sets no cookies for play. The site loads no third-party scripts, fonts, or trackers. Its content security policy allows page scripts and app network connections only from playpenned.com. The site runs on Cloudflare, which processes the requests your browser makes to load it and may keep short-lived logs for security and performance.
Sharing
When you share a scorecard, the image is drawn in your browser and handed to your device’s share sheet or saved as a file. Penned never receives the image; if anonymous stats are on, it records only that a share happened.
